Horse racing oddity: jockey misjudges distance Video

For some reason I find oddities like this May 16, 2004 race very entertaining. The Hasta la Vista Handicap at Turf Paradise in Arizona is run at what today is an unusually long distance of 1 7/8 miles. This requires two full circuits of the course, rather than the usual one time around in most races. Unfortunately for jockey Jorge Carreno, he forgets that minor detail, creating a very unusual sitation. On a personal note, in the early 1980s, I recall Hall of Fame jockey Jorge Velasquez falling victim to the same mental lapse in the 2 1/4 mile Display Handicap at Aqueduct. My father and I got a big kick out of the fans watching the replay cheering "come on Georgie" the first time around, as he was furiously whipping and driving despite having a mile left to run.

Some people have no idea about horse racing. The "it's cruel" brigade have no understanding of whips, and the way horses are treated. Horses die at pony club, horses die at the Olympics, horses die eventing, horses die at gymkana's. Horses die. A horse feels a whip like you feel a fly on you. The whip has a flat leather end designed to make a cracking sound. A horse is a flight animal, it hears the crack and feels it brushing against his hide. He runs faster,? because of flight response. Woops silly Jockey xD Whips don't hurt as much as you'd think, a friend who had a proper racing whip whipped the hell outta me one day with it, right across my backside and I got ready for the worst remembering being hit with normal crops, didn't hurt at all, sure it will hurt if used enough like anything would, but that is why they have rules for the amount of times you can use them (yes I? know people still do it anyway) racehorses are mostly treated like kings, but some aren't, minority cases

That two-year-olds are raced when they haven't even developed properly. That sending them hurtling over perilous obstacles from a gallop is a recipe for disaster. sorry to but in uninvited, but im totally on your side! i know someone who has a massive go at me for liking a 'cruel' sport every time she see's me, when she doesn't even know what a furlong is, yeah she rides and knows stuff about horses but when it comes to racing she knows nothing, and thats why she does not have the right to say? somethings cruel when she does not even know the basics about it

To Andrea901016: Cool down, you have no clue about racing. The horse does not get hit hard whit the whip, it just looks that way. The rule is that? you can not hit the horse, you must stop the whip before, so just a lash is the result. Learn something about racing before you open your mouth stupid.
